ArtLink Responses to Kilaatu Primary School Kenya

Here are our Grade 8 responses to our partner class artwork:
SOME IDEAS we learned about you culture
Dancing must be a big part of your culture
Your work is more focused on helping your family gain a living. You work alot harder than we do !
The scenery is very cool !
You have many animals that roam around freely
You families are much larger than ours and many of their career choices are similar to children in the USA
We have some of the same things--animals, TV, soccer but your outlook is different.
You learn to take care of your family at a much younger age.
Many work on farms.
We learned about crushing maize--the process Also the process of ploughing.
Fishing is fun and also a big part of your culture.
At a young age you already work. Camels help you transport things.
There is interesting wildlife in your drawings. I found the cultural dancing interesting and your Grandparents share folktales with you.
Storytelling is very interesting. We do not have as much here in USA.
You can gain a profit from doing something you love
I am amazed at your carving skills at such a young age and your love of woodwork.
You have so much spacious land there.
SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

You have similar performing arts-dancing
You have similar technology-TV computer
Your wild animals are not in zoos like ours
Your familey size is much larger
We don't look after cattle as part of our everyday life.
You do play football, soccer like we do
Your land is more flat and open
You work on farms--we have some areas for farming but it is not as widespread.
You follow in the same work that your parents are doing
We don't plough by foot in America--we use machines.
Your trees are different and your everyday use of wicker baskets is different. We use other products such as cloth, plastic...
Your clothes are similar for school but the cultural clothes are more colorful and a different style.
We fish here but not daily and we do fish for enjoyment as well
We use cars to travel and you walk more
Your use of electronics is less than ours
Two drawings has sand--we have sand but it is much more tan in color--not as red and finer in grain texture.
Our Grandparents tell us stories like yours do--often it is at a younger age adn not as often.
We like sports, reading and cooking as well.
The colors of your artwork are fantastic!
I don't like to wash clothes either but we have a machine in which to wash them
When we look out our windows we see city buildings and houses closer together--you see elephants, giraffes and wild animals !
SURPRISES TO US !
The dancers walk on stilts instead of just their feet.
How large a role farming plays in your life
I was surprised to see a lion and car so near each other.
I loved the sand and dirt attached to the drawings. Very interesting to bring part of your land to ours.
Your ways of living and working are more intense than ours
We did not know you could make a living selling coconuts and baskets.
We never thought of camels in Kenya--more India
Sitting around an open fire more often than we do.
All the work in the fields and the great level of wood carving.
We THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH for sharing your culture with us. We wanted to know if you speak English all the time--just in school ?
How do you learn your drawing skills?
Can you tell us more about the cultural dancing dress and any meanings?
Are you happy in your life ?
We really enjoyed Mulea Peter's use of color I also love to fish and want to be a teacher. Allison USA
What kind of stores does your Grandfather tell?
When you say football is it American football or soccer ?
Do you play basketball?
