The village of Jarovnice is situated in the Šariš highlands, in a picturesque valley through which flows the stream Malá Svinka. The village was established in the Neolithic Age. During the 17th to 19th centuries the village was owned by the Szinyei family. They built the castle with a spacious garden and park here. The well known painter of European importance Szinyei Marse Pal came from that family too. His paintings can be seen in the National Gallery in Budapest and in private collections.
Nowadays, the village is mostly agricultural. Jarovnice has about 4,200 inhabitants, of which almost 3,200 are Roma (gypsies). The 1st Elementary school (1. ZŠ) in Jarovnice No. 192 is attended only by Roma students (868 pupils in school year 2008/09). Children from this school on Art lessons, under the caring mentor Mgr. Jan Sajko, create very interesting, colorful and amazing art works. They were awarded on various competitions all over the world. ( India, Japan, Portugal, USA, Czech republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Macedonia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Islamic Republic of Iran ... )
Artworks were exhibited in different cities - Washington, Boston, Palm Beach, Los Angeles, Wilmington, Newark, Munich, Leipzig, Heidelberg, Hamburg, Rostock, Hannover, Strassbourg, Bruxelles, Graz, Warsaw, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Cracow, Bratislava, Kosice, Martin, Presov, Sabinov, etc. Those pictures were also used as ilustrations for books, calendars and postcards.
These results have to be admired due to the fact, that the authors (pupils) come from socially handicapped environments. In summer 1998 the severe tragedy affected the village. In the huge floods 50 inhabitants lost their life. Among the victims were 10 pupils from the 1st Elementary school in Jarovnice.
