Alan Steckler, Executive Director of Creative Connections
I am delighted that you have joined the exciting adventure of "Creatively Connecting" with fellow educators around the world.
Over the years, my family (Debbie, my wife of 19 years, Abbie, our 15 year-old daughter, and Timmy, our 12 year-old son) and I have loved visiting and meeting folks from many countries. We continually discover how enriching such contacts are and how much we have to learn from one another.
I very much look forward to getting to know all of you and invite you to start this process by being active contributors to CulturExchange!
A few details about me. Right after college, I began a teaching career at a boarding school in England that lasted for 11 years. While I particularly enjoyed taking long walks in the beautiful English countryside, the lasting influence of this experience was the exposure it provided me to Europe and a student body that saw itself a world citizens.
Upon my return to the US and teaching here, I discovered that the children I taught had a much more insular view of themselves and their world. I wondered what I could do to broaden the global awareness, understanding, and appreciation of my American students and, with the inspirational support of my wife and family, founded Creative Connections in 1992.
For over 16 years, it has been an amazingly rewarding experience to see Creative Connections' work expand and deepen to where it now touches the lives of many thousands of children each each year. I remain most grateful to our Board of Directors and to the many individuals and foundations who have supported our efforts.
On a more personal note, my family is the center of my life and it's greatest joy. My outside interests include skiing, biking, and theatre ( I have a degree in Educational Theater). I particularly love musical theatre and am thrilled that my children share this love with me. We can be heard singing together (with gusto if not always fully on key) at the drop of a hat.
I wish you and your students great success in the your creative endeavors with us. And...keep singing!
